A to Z 2013: Climate

For the month of April I will be blogging alphabetically with the theme of Winnipeg versus Davao City. Not to prove a winner but simply to explore the differences and similarities between my home town and my current location.

C is for Climate!

Spring in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg has four extreme seasons. Our record lows and highs are -45°C to +41°C.

Summertime at the monastery.

Summers are hot and brilliant with 16 hours of day light. Fall is cool, crisp and colourful. Winter is incredibly harsh and leaves many wondering what kind of crazy pioneers thought these were livable conditions. Then spring is again hopeful and refreshing.

Fall in the city.
Even on the cap of Mt. Apo there is never snow. It just doesn't get cold in the Philippines.

A frosty Winterpeg morning.
Davao, on the other hand, has record lows and highs of +15°C to +43°C. Most years stay between 20°C and 40°C. As in, over night in "winter" it only drops to 20°C. There isn't even a pronounced rainy season like in many tropical locales. It's just hot and humid everyday.

The difference between the 49th and 7th parallel.

  1. I wish Queensland had distinct seasons. Unfortunately, we have hot and not so hot. That's pretty much it.

  4. Living in Ontario I can empathise with your winter in Winnipeg. Today with lots of heating its not so bad, but I agree, who in their right minds considered these conditions livable. Loved your pictures.

  15. Those photos are great. I like temperature changes. I went to St.Lucia for a week, it was beautiful but having the same temperature at 2:00am as you have at 2:00pm with only the difference being a sweltering sun, drove me insane. Although, not sure I could handle the brutal winter :)

  30. Absolutely gorgeous photos. I used to live in Pennsylvania, where we had four very defined seasons. Fall was always my favorite but I hated winter, so I moved to the south. Now I am in Georgia and I really miss the seasons. We have summer (eight months out of the year) and "rain season" (Four months out of the year) here. That's about it. I don't miss the ice and snow, but I really everything else!!

    Nice blog btw...I'm a new follower. :)

    1. Thank you so much! I am fascinated by different climates... how people live, how it affect the local culture, how such small geographical changes can bring you to a whole new world...

I don't miss having to deal with ice and snow but sometimes I miss boots and sweaters. :P And my toque!

  31. Those photos are a feast for the eyes. We've had a long and harsh winter in the Midwest this year. As an expat in the U.S., having experienced all the seasons on the West Coast, upstate NY, down South, and now in the Midwest, I still miss the South African climate.

BTW, I'm also participating in A -Z; hope to see you around some time soon.
